The Bigger Picture, Issue 27

How’s the new year treating you? Motivated and ready to tackle it? Kinda sluggish, but getting into gear? How about just down-right cold? Yeah, me too. But here we go! Dive in!

ADA Improvement Bill Drafted

An activist from Topeka has helped to draft a bill that has been introduced by Sen. Charles Schumer (D) from New York. This bill is the Disability Integration Act, and at first glance it has some enormous improvements for systems aimed to aid people with disabilities. Here in Georgia, we have several programs that help keep people in the community and setting of their choice, like CCSP and other Medicaid Waivers. Unfortunately, these programs either have year-to-multiple-year long waiting lists, or are simply closed at this time due to lack of funds. The DI Act would eliminate those wait lists and freezes in states that provide long term services to people with disabilities. You can read more from The Topeka-Capital Journal here. (The bill is currently headed to the Senate Committee on Health.)

City of Jacksonville to Be Made ADA Compliant

The city of Jacksonville, in our neighboring state Alabama, was notified six months ago by theĀ East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission (along with several other nearby municipalities) that the infrastructure of their city needed to be updated to be compliant with the American’s with Disabilities Act. This is excellent news for anyone with a disability who lives in or near Jacksonville, as well as anyone that visits the city. You can read more about the upcoming changes from The Jacksonville News at this link.

United Airlines Fined for Disability-Related Complaints

Each week, it seems like we’re sharing news of more ADA violations and companies or individuals not willing to make something accessible for people with disabilities. This week, it’s global commercial airline United Airlines. They have been fined $2.75 million and the violations go all the way back to 2013.
